Ergotherapy as a bridge to employment for people with autism

Ensuring meaningful employment for people with autism is important for their future independence. Occupational therapy is the bridge towards this goal. It also has an integration component. Its intensive application helps achieve progress in several directions.

Viva continues to support the “My Way” Social-Habilitation, Educational, and Vocational Training Day Care Center, setting a new milestone in their partnership. A key focus at the center is ensuring meaningful employment opportunities.

Throughout the summer, ergotherapy has played a central role at “My Way”. Now another program is underway, aimed at drying greens and fruits. When planning it, specialists take a comprehensive approach, considering each child’s physical, social, emotional, sensory, and cognitive abilities and needs. With the guidance of occupational therapists, each participant becomes part of the production chain: they clearly understand their role and take the necessary steps. Small groups are formed to achieve maximum results. It helps beneficiaries develop diligence, responsibility, social skills, also contributing to emotional regulation, improving cognitive skills, and ultimately creating job opportunities.

From washing greens to drying and packaging, the students of the “My Way” center carry out the work. Specialists support in the sequence of steps and guidance. The funds generated from the final products are reinvested to further promote smart employment.

If they do not believe in their own abilities and do not take sufficient steps — even toward the smallest positive change — any external intervention would be meaningless.
