Viva General Director Armen Avetisian Delivers a Lecture on the Internet of Things Using the “Narrowband IoT” Network as an Example

Viva’s General Director, Armen Avetisian, delivered a lecture titled “Modern Wireless Systems, IoT, and Networks” for students enrolled in the Viva University program. During the lecture, he spoke about trends in IoT (Internet of Things) technology development, practical implementation examples, and the importance of business leadership in the era of digital transformation.

“Digitalization brings changes to business models and processes, influencing socio-economic and societal developments as well. Companies must be ready to respond quickly to the opportunities offered by digital transformation, one of which is the Internet of Things (IoT),” said Armen Avetisian.

“If traditional telecom infrastructure is the bloodstream of the digital economy, then IoT networks—together with platforms, big data, and artificial intelligence—become its nervous system and brain. Narrowband IoT is only one of the tools in a broad set of technologies that make it possible to ‘feel’ the real-time state of a city, a business, or the environment and turn these signals into meaningful decisions. For people, this means more convenient and safer services in everyday life; for businesses — transparent processes, predictive maintenance, and increased efficiency; and for the state — smart, data-driven infrastructure and an entirely new level of public service quality,” Avetisyan noted.

The General Director emphasized that Viva is currently conducting a commercial operation of a dedicated Narrowband IoT network. This narrowband radio-frequency technology is specifically designed for the Internet of Things and is intended to connect large numbers of autonomous devices and equipment to mobile networks.

The Internet of Things is a technological environment in which various sensors and devices are connected to the internet and exchange data with one another without human intervention. Examples include smart water meters, intelligent electricity meters, parking sensors, environmental monitoring devices, soil-moisture sensors used in agriculture, and more.

“Today, the development, implementation, and maintenance of IoT systems require specialists with new skill sets. The importance of IoT continues to grow, as it forms the foundation for the further advancement of artificial intelligence — which, in turn, can significantly enhance business process efficiency and overall quality of life,” Avetisian added.
