Viva and “My Way” conducted a one-year review of their work
People with autism often experience sensory challenges: they are either overly sensitive or, on the contrary, show little response to sounds, touch, and temperature. One way to help is through water therapy. This rehabilitation method is recognised worldwide and supports the development of motor, sensory, and social skills in children with autism spectrum disorders.
With Viva’s support, adaptive physical education classes at the “My Way” Social-Habilitation, Educational, and Vocational Training Day Care Center became more intensive a year ago. Partner organizations worked to provide water therapy. To assess the results of the almost daily classes, a regular open-air water therapy session was held in Sevan one year later.
According to experts, the therapy organized in a natural environment after the small pools of the “My Way” center is a unique challenge not only for the children, but also for the specialists themselves. In this environment, both achievements and areas for improvement become more evident.
“In terms of overcoming dangers in the aquatic environment, children with autism are more vulnerable. Many struggle with balance, spatial orientation, and movement planning. The natural sound of Lake Sevan balances the nervous system, the waves’ motion and resistance develop muscle strength and flexibility without straining the joints. Here, the children can perform movements that would be difficult on land. During therapy, they learn to swim, stay safe in the water, maintain boundaries, and call for help if needed. This is not only therapy, but also a bridge that ensures inclusion and socialization,” said Gohar Karapetyan, head of the program.
The open-air water therapy proved effective. The gentle rhythm of Lake Sevan’s waves combined with the expertise of the specialists helped bring out the children’s skills. As a result, improvements were recorded in motor skills, water safety, inclusion, and social interaction.
Viva has been supporting the “My Way” Social-Habilitation, Educational, And Vocational Training Day Care Center for children with autism for many years. Over the past 19 years, the company has invested more than AMD 251 million. “My Way” began its work in 2006, supporting 5 families with 5 specialists. Today, the center serves 253 children. “My Way” has its motto: “I am not like you, I am one of you.” The center celebrates each step forward as an important achievement, which was made possible thanks to the dedication of its specialists and the support of organizations that trust them.
